COMMISSIONS

On taking a commission I arrange to meet the client and pet to get an idea of the animals personality traits and characteristics and take photos. If this is not possible, perhaps the pet is no longer alive or the client is too far away to travel then I ask the client to send as many photos from different angles for me to work from.
I will also need to know the approximate size of the final outcome.

I begin by making a couple of small scale models in my studio to ensure the client is happy with the development of the sculpture and to discuss any changes if necessary. Then I model the final outcome sending regular progress photos to the client and encourage a visit to my studio to ensure satisfaction with the finished sculpture before the next stage:

CERAMIC COMMISSION

If the client would like a ceramic outcome the sculpture is carefully hollowed out and then allowed to completely dry before it is fired in the kiln using the discussed colour/glaze.

The photo displays a ceramic commissioned Norfolk Terrier called ‘Nelson’ (H22cm W15cm D20cm).

‘Our Manchester Terrier Oscar was unfortunately diagnosed with terminal cancer, and in July 2020 we decided it would be a wonderful memory of him to commission a life size bronze sculpture. I met Susie and she took pictures of Oscar taking measurements and making sure she had all the images and dimensions she needed.  Susie kept me posted with regular updates, initially as a small scale model, then the fullsize clay version. My wife and I both absolutely love what Susie has created and ‘Oscar’ now sits proudly in our study.’

MAKING PROCESS

This image features a black Labrador (‘Moolie’) modelled in clay from a wide range of photos from all angles for a surprise birthday present. The client opted for a ceramic sculpture.

‘Moolie’ measures approximately H24cm W12cm x D30cm and now sits on the client’s mantlepiece above their fireplace.

BRONZE COMMISSION

Pet commissions are also available in bronze. The clay modelling process is the same as above but this time on completion of the making stage the sculpture is taken to the foundry where it is cast in to bronze. The sculpture will have a cast made and using process called the ‘lost wax process’ is poured into bronze.

Below, on the left, is ‘Jess’ a much loved family pet who, as shown in the right image, was made in bronze. The right photo also shows a small scale model I made to prepare for the large outcome. The sculptures’ measurements are approx: H50cm W24cm D50cm.
